A new study shows the down economy may be changing the face of retail crime. The report, sponsored in part by ADT and its Sensormatic Retail Solutions group, suggests that employees are stealing less merchandise while shoplifting or theft by consumers and gangs is on the rise.
IndigoVision’s complete IP video system has been deployed at the new arc Shopping Center in Bury St Edmonds in the United Kingdom. The level of global retail theft reached $114.8 billion in 2009, representing a significant increase of 5.9 percent over last year’s total of $104.5 billion, according to the third annual edition of the Global Retail Theft Barometer.
Nine out of 10 shop owners have experienced fewer thefts and robberies, and increased security for staff since installing video surveillance. This is shown in a survey by the Swedish Retail Institute that has been conducted on behalf of the Swedish Trade Federation in cooperation with Axis Communications.

For years, retail has been the largest vertical market for video surveillance. And a major international retailer will spend $15 million for its two-year asset protection and safety program contract extension. There are many reasons why retailers employ video surveillance. Theft is, of course, a prime motivation. American retailers lose billions of dollars per year due to theft from shoppers and employees.
